One of the best things about having friends who grew up and reside in different countries is trading cultural influences. Sometimes artists or writers whose work seems so iconic as to become obvious at home have nothing to do with the knit of cultural fabric elsewhere; they have their own A Tree Grows in Stuttgart, which maybe I'd like better than our own.
