Tavern Books released Night is Simply a Shadow, a collection from the poet Greta Wrolstad. Something about her poetry reminds me of Seamus Heaney's, maybe simply because he's on my mind from being in the news, but I see parallels in the style of their work.
A sample of Wrolstad's work, from "Notes on Sea & Shore":
For months I have wanted to send you a drawing,
exceedingly detailed, showing ourselves without
skin. Imagine you received it. Imagine you are
the page which water has never touched.
Her poetry is so elemental, sophisticated and satisfying, it's hard to believe she wrote it by age 24, when she died in a car accident. Lucky that Tavern has supported her work and the work of young women poets through the Wrolstad Contemporary Poetry Series.
